Natural Hair Dye Tips: Avoiding a Build Up of Colour

If you're experiencing a problem with your hair getting darker and darker due to a build up of natural hair colour from repeated applications read on…

If you have very light grey hair coming through at your roots, and a medium to dark brown or black colour on the ends of your hair you will need a strong colourant on your roots to colour the grey. However if you repeatedly put the strong colour all over your hair it will get darker and darker on your already brown hair lower down.

Three Ways to Avoid Dark Hair Colour Build Up On The Ends:
1. The ideal solution is putting the colour only on your roots and not put it all over your hair every time, so the length of your hair doesn't build up too dark a colour.

2. Use a darker colour on the roots and a lighter colour on the length of your hair.

3. Leaving the colourant on for a shorter time will give a lighter colour and for a longer time will give a darker colour. So you could experiment with leaving it on for a longer time on the roots a shorter time on the length. So firstly put the colour only on your roots, leave it on for some time (say 30 minutes or 1 hour) then apply the colour to the rest of your hair and leave this on for an additional length of time. Finally wash all the colour out of your entire head of hair. You would need to experiment with the processing times of course.

It can be difficult to see what you are doing when you apply the hair dye yourself. In order to treat different parts of your hair differently it is helpful if you have a friend/spouse/relative to help you apply the dye. If you have everything prepared beforehand it shouldn’t take up too much of their time.

Two Recommendations for a Dark Colour on Your Grey Hair:
1. It’s Pure Organics Herbal Hair Colour Dark Brown available on this page: https://www.suvarna.co.uk/itspure-organics-hair-dyes/its-pure-dark-brown.html

2. It’s Pure Organics Pure Henna and Indigo. To get a dark brown you would mix something like 2 parts indigo to 1 part henna - available on this page: https://www.suvarna.co.uk/pure-henna-indigo.html

Here are the links to see the tester sizes of them:

For very mild colours which will not darken the length of your hair too much
(But they will not give strong dark colours on the roots) I would recommend the following: Logona Brown Umber, Logona Natural Brown, Logona Nougat Colour Cream.

For a hair colour which is a little less dark than the It’s Pure Dark Brown or henna and indigo: You could try Its Pure Organics Natural Brown as it is lighter than the Dark Brown. There may still be some colour build up with this though. It will of course depend on your hair type and how long you leave it on for too.

If Your Hair Has Already Gone Too Dark
You can only lighten your hair with a peroxide based hair dye which we don't sell.  But you could try lifting some of the colour off using some of the natural methods I suggest in my blog post here…

Trial and Error
It is really trial and error because everyone's hair is different in terms of your initial hair colour, and the structure and chemistry of your hair and reacts differently to different colours. So it is impossible to predict exactly how the colour will be on different people’s hair. For this reason we always recommend strand testing before putting it all over your hair. See this article here about how to strand test: https://www.suvarna.co.uk/blog/why-strand-test.html
